We commonly have to add and delete files from our computer’s hard drive. However, the computer doesn’t always perform this task in am efficient way. For example, lets say you delete a series of small files and then add a large file. The computer might store the large file by breaking into a series of smaller files which are stored in multiple areas on your hard disk. The files will still be recognized and read as one large file. However, in the process, the harddrive will have to scan multiple parts of the disk to completely read the file. Because hard drive seek time is one of the most significant bottlenecks in a computers performance, this can drag down your computer speed quite a bit.
If you have a ton of “fragmented” files on your hard drive you might hear grinding,sputtering and other weird noises coming from your computer. Microsoft provides you with a defragmenting tool, but if you have never defrag before it will take several days to run.
