Google Phone Fresh Look - Plus Many GPhone Arts & Clues
T Mobile prepaid phone. When the iPhone came out I tried very hard to resist reading too much about it. It was easy to resist at the time though since it came with a hefty price tag. Apple was starting to sound a lot like a company called Microsoft with buggy software & bundles. Also there were rumors circulating about a Google phone using a dazzling new open source operating system. The result? I’m a happy camper. The G1 is an excellent and cheaper alternative to the iPhone.
Most reviewers agree that the OS is great but it’s not as fancy or impressive as the iPhone’s interface. Gigaom compared it as “G-1 is Honda to iPhone’s BMW.” Well I drive a Civic so it works for me.
It’s also a little heavier & thicker but as engadget points out it’s no dealbreaker. Plus I like my gadgets to feel sturdy & hardy. The iPhone is little too delicate for my taste.
Additionally my experience with the G1 isn’t colored by any iPhone usage. Even though I’ve seen it up close & personal I’ve never handled one. For me I thought everything was fairly intuitive. Overall I’m very happy with the functionality & usability. I love the Qwerty keyboard. I didn’t like the touch screen keyboard on the iPhone. The trackball is also extremely useful & the touch screen is responsive. I’ve already downloaded a few applications form Marketplace & am kind of addicted to the Memory game which is just like this old game called Simon.
The low memory will bother some people & may indeed be a dealbreaker. The data plan is also cheaper. 400 text messages is more than sufficient for me. I did have a problem last night while on a conference call — the call dropped 3 times in 1 hour. I called T-Mobile immediately afterward where I was sent to three different unhelpful but friendly technical support representatives. The first representative actually called the person I had been on a call with & kept him on the line for 10 minutes to see if his phone was dropping calls I had tried to explain that I was on a conference call & I was the only one dropping out of the call. This G1 specialist asked me to turn off & then turn on my phone. Wow. Today my boyfriend called me & kept me on the line during his commute to work about 40 min & no dropped call. Ultimately I’m not sure if the G1 is taking away any market share. Would I have bought an iPhone eventually? I’m just happy that the Honda crowd has a chance to own a phone that reflects their interests instead of settling for a less attractive option. Go Google.
There is bunch of really cool features IF you are a Google junkie like me. Before I ever purchased the G1 I was already using Google for my email calendar photos & documents. I love iGoogle for all the great widgets & since I am an old school google user I found the transition to the phone seem less. If you are looking for this pone to be an iPhone you will be very disappointed it NOT an iPhone but it does have many similar apps a lot for free. Worried about hiding things on the phone? There is 2 ways to do this one you can go to the “market” & download Linda File Manager for free this will allow you to change the name of folders & files on your memory stick. it will also allow you to copy cut & paste files. If you rename a folder by putting a period in front of the / it will hide the folder. There are a couple of pay programs on the market & the best one I have found is Hide & Seek it $.99 so a good deal allows you to tap to hide & has password locking as well as a cool flashlight feature to hide the face you have a program hiding files.
The G1 is heat touch screen which makes it awesome in MOST situations like no pocket dialing. It sucks though if you have gloves on because you cant use the phone without taking them off defeating the purpose of the gloves.
Want to add app shortcuts to the home screens? In the app menu just press & hold the app & it will drop the menu away so you add the app to the home screen.
The camera on the phone sucks no way around that right now. Uploading music to the phone is simple enough through the USB port it took me a minute to figure out that you need to actually mount it thru the phone when it pops up saying it connected to USB. I love the Amazon music download it all in MP3 format & allows me to just use my amazon login info to purchase
The “Market” this is great way to get appp I have never been really able to buy apps for my phones because the actual bill is business phone so if I bought apps thru the phone it was charged to the bill. With the “Market” you just use google checkout which makes it so I can just charge my credit card. Worried about your phone getting scratched up? I have a Zagg invisible shield on mine. These things work I am the type to dump my phone in my purse & be on my way. The shield is little pricey & a pain to put on but totally worth it for protecting your investment. I dropped the phone about 2 weeks ado & even though the corner where it smashed into the ground looked bad when I lifted the shield it was fine. I just cleaned out around the little tab sand & pushed it back down & it if fine.
